Methadone treatment is the principle way heroin addiction in Ireland is treated today, but just how effective is it? And what makes methadone chemically different to heroin? Nuala Kane talks to Dr Bobby Smyth of the Department of Public Heath & Primary Care in Trinity College Dublin, also a psychiatrist specialising in teenage drug addiction.
